Domestic Exchange
The domestic student exchange program enables students of SNU to experience the diverse and specialized academics offered by other universities within the country. In a wider scope, the program aims to promote academic exchanges on all levels, including faculty exchanges and cooperative research, and to advance the competence of Korean universities in general.
1. Qualifications for Application
If you wish to study as an exchange student at another university within Korea, you should first make sure that you are eligible. Qualifications include a clean record (no violations of school regulations) and a GPA of over 2.7 for undergraduates and 3.3 for graduate students. If you are eligible under these conditions, then you need a recommendation from your advisor. You should submit the recommendation papers along with an application form to your department head professor, who will then hand it over to the dean of your specific college (Humanities, Engineering, etc.) for a final review. The applications should be submitted at least 3 months (2 months for summer/winter sessions) before the start of the semester during which you wish to go.
2. Course Enrollment
If your application is accepted, you will pay tuition to SNU, but all enrollments, changes and withdrawals of courses are to be made at your chosen exchange university. Ideally, the courses you take there should belong to your original major, but you may take other courses as well if your advisor agrees, or if there is a compelling reason. Per semester, undergraduates can take up to 18 credits, graduate students can take up to 12 (or 9 during summer session/ 6 during winter session), and the credits will be recognized at SNU after a review from your department. (Credits may not be recognized if you have already taken the same course at SNU or if the course is otherwise deemed unsuitable by your department.)
3. Credit Recognition
The grades you receive from the exchange university will appear on your academic record, but they will not be averaged into your final GPA unless you are part of a collaborative degree program. Any courses from exchange schools that appear on your academic record will be marked as “Credits received at _______ University”. Undergraduates may study at the exchange school for up to 4 semesters, graduate students 2 semesters. There is no such limit for summer/winter sessions.
The domestic exchange program is a great way to experience life at other schools in Korea, meet new people, and study subjects that may not be covered within SNU’s curriculum. Many students have taken part in this program since 1998, during regular semesters and seasonal sessions alike, and more continue to participate today.
